This calculator implements the standard short-stay rule: 90 days in any rolling 180-day period, counting the day of entry and the day of exit. It is a planning aid, not an immigration decision. Your own stamps, permits and visa history are what a border officer goes on, so confirm anything borderline with the relevant authority before you travel.

How the 90/180 rule actually works

It is not a calendar year and it does not reset when you leave. On any given day, look back over the previous 180 days and add up every day you spent inside the Schengen area. That total has to stay at or under 90.

Because the window rolls, your allowance trickles back one day at a time rather than arriving all at once. Ninety days in the zone followed by a week out does not buy you another ninety.

The calculator counts the day of entry and the day of exit as full days, which is how border officers count them. It also merges overlapping trips, so a stay you enter twice cannot inflate your total.

Common questions

Does the day I fly in count?

Yes. Both the day you enter and the day you leave count as full days, even if you land near midnight or leave first thing in the morning.

Is Ireland in the Schengen area?

No. Ireland is in the EU but outside Schengen, so days there do not touch your 90. It works the other way too: Switzerland, Norway and Iceland are inside Schengen but outside the EU, and days there do count.

Does the 90 days reset when I leave?

No, and this is the part most people get wrong. The window rolls. On any given day you look back over the previous 180 days and add up the days you were inside. Your allowance comes back one day at a time as old days drop off the back.

What happens if I overstay?

It depends on the country and how far over you are. Consequences range from a note on your record to a fine or a ban on re-entry. With entry and exit now being logged electronically at the border, it is much harder to go unnoticed than it used to be.

Does a residence permit or a long-stay visa change this?

Yes. The 90/180 rule is for short stays. If you hold a national long-stay visa or a residence permit for a Schengen country, time in that country is generally covered by the permit instead. Check your own permit, because the rules for time spent in other Schengen countries still apply.
